As a member of Zayo’s Solution Architecture Organization, the Solutions Engineer Specialist position is a dynamic opportunity for individuals to further develop their skillset as a technical point of contact within the telecom industry. The Solutions Engineer Specialist is responsible for providing operational and administrative support throughout the pre-sale process. This includes designing high-level network solutions for new and existing customers, route visualization of Zayo’s backbone layer, engaging vendor teams, and completing specific task support for moderately complex data networking solutions.


The Solutions Engineer Specialist will be aligned with a specific mentor from within the SA organization for hands-on learning. Through this mentorship, the Solutions Engineer Specialist will receive technical training and be evaluated periodically to demonstrate their skillset internally within Zayo and externally with customers. Key focus areas will include simple and complex solution design, technical documentation capturing physical and logical solutions, vendor proposal assistance, and ensuring complete and accurate documentation for all supported opportunities. 


Responsibilities: 

  • Sales Support: 

    • Drive sales through technical and operational pre-sale support 

    • Utilize GIS-based systems, previous solution designs, Zayo product knowledge, and specific requirements to qualify and support unique customer requests 

    • Drive sale closure by shortening the basic custom solution sales cycle 

    • Participate in creating and delivering high-level face-to-face sales presentations that demonstrate technical knowledge of the latest Zayo products and services. 


  • Solution Design: 

    • Analyze customer requirements to understand how Zayo products and services can be applied to meet their needs and solve their problems. 

    • Provide customers requiring simple solutions service options that meet their current or future business applications 

    • Assist Solution Engineering with gathering, organizing, analyzing, and presenting applicable technical and financial information for internal and external stakeholders 

    • Stay up to date with the competitive landscape and emerging technologies to best position Zayo in the marketplace. 


  • Planning and Logistics: 

    • Adhere to and communicate timeline expectations for project completion 

    • Provide regular project updates to internal customers (sales, engineering, technical operations)


  • General:

    • Adhere to all company standards and overall business professionalism

    • Demonstrate regular, consistent, and punctual attendance

    • Perform other duties as assigned 


  • Qualifications: 

    • Recommended to have a minimum of 1 year experience in technical sales engineering/support role(s) within the telecommunications industry (ideally ISP, CLEC, ILEC, VAR, or MSO) 

    • High-level understanding of Fiber Optic network design and implementation 

    • Proficiency in navigating the OSI Model 

    • Recommended to have technical solid presentation skills (development and delivery) 

    • Excellent project management skills 

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to laypersons in simple, understandable terms 

    • Consistent focus on results and goal achievement 

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel 

    • Strong teamwork skills 

    • Ability to handle ambiguity and anticipate and quickly react to changes in a fast-paced environment 


  • Preferred Additional Experience: 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, Economics, General Business, and or related field of study

    • Recommended minimum of 1 year experience in sales/ engineering/ customer support role(s) within the telecommunications industry (ideally ISP, CLEC, ILEC, VAR, or MSO)

    • Salesforce, Google Earth, ESRI, MyWorld/GE Smallworld 

    • Proficiency in navigating the OSI Model 

    • MAN technologies and designs (including DS-x, OC-x, WDM, and Ethernet) 

    • Internet technologies, functionality, and services 

    • Networking protocols (emphasis on Layers 1, 2, and 3) 

    • Data networking technologies, functionality, and services (LAN, MAN, WAN, VPN)
